Bio

Marko Tkalčič is Full Professor of Computer Science and Chair of the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies (DIST) at the University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia. His research brings together recommender systems, user modeling, and affective computing to study how personalized systems can account for people’s preferences, emotions, and personality. Much of his work concerns music and movie recommendation, including the distinction between experiences sought for enjoyment and those valued for meaning or reflection. His interests also include group recommendation and the role of psychological factors in shared decisions.

He received his PhD from the University of Ljubljana in 2011 and subsequently held academic positions in Slovenia, Austria, and Italy before joining the University of Primorska in 2019. His scholarly contributions include co-editing the books Emotions and Personality in Personalized Services, Group Recommender Systems, and A Human-Centered Perspective of Intelligent Personalized Environments and Systems, as well as co-authoring chapters on personality and recommender systems in the Recommender Systems Handbook. His conference leadership roles include Program Chair of ACM UMAP 2021 and ACM RecSys 2027.
